I couldn't ask for a better co-host, business partner, or friend than Patrick Malloy. He is my “How I Got to WantecVR” story. It’s only fitting that he gets to share his story, in his own style.
How did you first hear about WantecVR?
"I was looking for a job and one of my best friends, William Thomas, offered for me to come in and check the place out to see if I wanted to work there".
What is your first memory at Wantec as a customer?
"William Thomas put me into the Anvio VR experience and told me nothing but “you gotta kill the zombies” it was some of the most fun I’ve ever had. After I took the headset off and got back to reality I was enamored with the place".
What is your favorite memory of the owner Stef?
"It would have to be when Stef first hired me and asked me to get a key made for myself. When I was in Lowe’s doing the thing I chose the ugliest key I could find. It was cheetah print key, just horrendous looking, I still have it too. When I first got the chance to use it I was with stef and we were locking up, I pulled locked the door and put went to put it in my pocket. As I was doing so he asked me to see it and when I showed it to him I said “I got the worst one I could find”. I expected him to laugh at me but he started laughing with me. He fumbled in his pocket while exclaiming “I did the same thing!” He then brandished the most beautiful shitpost of a spider man printed key. It was astonishing. This was one of the first moments that started to bring me and Stefan close and made me think wantec was a place worth staying at".
What was WantecVR like when you first started?
"Wantec was a fun little hole in the wall when I first got there, we barely had any customers, we had no alcohol, and we had one small fridge with some energy drinks in it. It was without form we hadn’t started getting out of out box yet. With the efforts of the employees and Stefan love for having fun, it all changed quickly".
Why is WantecVR a place worth staying at?
"It’s divey and sketchy around the edges but it’s a place full of love and community. We all look out for each-other and have each others backs".
What makes WantecVR different as a bar aside from our games and virtual reality?
"We’re ballas"
What makes a “regular” at WantecVR in your opinion?
"The customers who go above and beyond when it comes to making our long hours feel shorter, being patient with us when shit goes wrong, and being genuine friends we can rely on even outside the bar. Our regulars are like family we love seeing them and they love seeing us".
What is your favorite drink and why?
"Beluga vodka from the freezer neat, that s—goes hard".
What kind of improvements are you wanting to see out of Wantec?
"We’ve been able to get the race team off the ground, we’re in the final stages of our theatre being built, and we’re in the final processes of building our menu and getting the kitchen up and running. All these things are coming together well and once they’re all in place wantec will be better than it’s ever been before".
